Job Description
Technical Artists serve as a critical liaison between creative and technical teams within the game development lifecycle. Their primary role involves translating artistic vision into functional game assets while ensuring technical feasibility and performance optimization. This position requires a deep understanding of both artistic principles and engineering practices to facilitate seamless collaboration across departments. By bridging the gap between design and development, Technical Artists contribute to the creation of high-quality, scalable game content that meets both creative and technical standards.
Key responsibilities include managing production workflows to streamline asset creation and delivery, developing custom tools and pipelines to enhance efficiency, and integrating assets into the game engine while maintaining visual fidelity. They also focus on optimizing assets for performance across different platforms, ensuring compatibility with hardware limitations and software requirements. Additionally, Technical Artists are involved in shader development to achieve desired visual effects, working closely with artists and engineers to refine technical implementations.
Job Requirements
- Proven experience as a Technical Artist in game development, with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in asset optimization and technical implementation.
- Advanced knowledge of 3D modeling, texturing, and animation techniques, combined with proficiency in game engine tools such as Unity or Unreal Engine.
- Strong programming skills in C++ or Python, with experience in scripting for asset pipelines and automation workflows.
- Excellent understanding of rendering pipelines, shader programming (e.g., HLSL, GLSL), and performance optimization principles for real-time applications.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including artists, designers, and engineers, to resolve technical challenges and align creative goals with technical constraints.
- Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Maya, Blender, Photoshop, and Substance Painter, along with familiarity with version control systems like Perforce or Git.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving mindset to troubleshoot technical issues during asset creation and integration processes.
- Experience with real-time rendering optimization techniques, including LOD (Level of Detail) systems, occlusion culling, and texture compression.
- Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and document processes for team-wide understanding.
- Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and workflows, staying updated with industry trends and best practices in technical art.
